Spanning more than 40 years and over two continents, this is a novel set in the historical background of the latter part of the 20th century.
At age four, Nan fled from Communist China to Taiwan through a perilous journey led by her mother. There, she grew up in a meager yet nurturing environment. After college, she attended Cornell University for graduate studies. Her subsequent experience and close relationships with a group of five all-male fellow graduate students took her through an unexpected path that led to multiple tribulations. She fell in love with one who could only reciprocate her love in his heart but not in his action. She married another, yet their blissful life together was again mercilessly challenged. The brilliance of their minds was not able to protect them from human tragedies. Throughout, diverse social issues and human emotions were exposed and explored.
The various story lines are weaved together into one interconnected whole. It is a triumphant account of unrelenting love and friendship.

What a beautiful story. It may be fiction, but so many of these life events are just an essential and inescapable part of being human that we can all relate to the characters' loves and losses. And I'm sure there are so many people with similar stories about escape from communist China (or other political conflict). It's hard to fathom the bravery they displayed in their journeys. A great story of love and courage, as the title promises.Product details

The Triumphant Life A Story of Love and Courage (Audible Audio Edition) JinChen Camilla Wang Shannon Sorensen Books Reviews
There were so many experiences in this book. At the beginning for the book we learn about the flight of many Chinese from the Communists to Taiwan, some being hair raising escapes. Then the book turns to a Chinese student's very happy days at Cornell University in the USA, meeting new friends and forging a good life there. Near the end of the book we experience another emotion--that of grief over the deaths of some family and friends. All the while there's a thread running through the last half of the book of love lost and then being reunited again. But I better stop here as I don't wish to give away the ending.
The title says it all this is a tale of the triumphant beauty of life and the love that sustains it. Cleanly written, and easy to read the story pulls you along and makes it hard to put down. The characters emerge, evoke a connection, and show the reader a path that resonates even to those with very different backgrounds and paths. Triumph is easy when all is "roses", but to be truly triumphant is the result of the perseverance in the face of unbearable hardships. Beyond the personal stories, the author's ability to scrape away at the political myths of our lifetimes and show the real impact on good people of the rise of Chinese communism and its carry-over into the Vietnam war is refreshing, and many in our world today would do well to think clearly on that history and its wrong-minded implications still today.
This inspirational and quasi-religious tale traces the saga of two generations of a Chinese family from their harrowing escape to Taiwan after the Communist takeover, through the journey of one daughter to the United States and her life there.
Although the adults long to return home, they are otherwise happy in Taiwan, while their offspring, particularly Nan, live a nearly storybook existence among hordes of children and nurturing adults.
Wang’s expository prose is precise, well-written, and straightforward; even waxing poetic at times. “It was late September. Some leaves had already raced ahead of the others, winning autumn’s first gift of colors.” (124) However, after Nan arrives at Cornell University, exposition takes a backseat to extensive dialogue which is stilted and unnatural. Characters’ voices become indistinguishable from each other, and the tendency to speak in philosophical and pop-psychology platitudes sounds particularly jarring in the mouths of American graduate students. Fortunately, Wang’s descriptive skills rescue these characters from becoming automatons, and she manages to construct real-life, unique individuals despite the way they speak.
After graduation Nan marries and continues her fairy-tale, existence until it is challenged by adversity.
Part history, part coming-of-age, part redemptive tale, Triumph has something for everyone.
good book, inspiring
What a book. It is hard to believe it is a fiction. I was touched and engaged in every detail of the
" story ". For reader like me, witnessed the historical political event, experienced the same education process from Taiwan to the US, the book brings back lots of memory. And now the burden shifts to the reader like me to wrestle and mesmerize my own experience. The reminiscence took a while to settle. What a book.
This was an engrossing story of, yes, triumph! The challenges and obstacles this family faced made for a great read. For those wanting to understand how harrowing it was families fleeing the communists, this book does not disappoint. I would certainly recommend this book for its historical perspective and also a very endearing life and love story.
This book tells the lives of a mother and a daughter who face life’s adversities with positive attitude and courage. It deals with family/social issues such as the birth of a child with a fatal genetic disorder and the suicide of a young man with an overly demanding father. The book is filled with encouraging words and love and lacks any foul language or sexy scene (not even a simple kiss between the lovers.) It should be a great reading material for people of all ages.
